What causes delay pregnancy or affects fertility?

It is often due to problems in the body of a man or woman or both, and when such problems occur, doctors perform tests and investigations for both partners, trying to find out the cause.

Why should I see a doctor if pregnancy is delayed?

Most doctors advise that couple should visit the doctor, and perform the medical tests when the pregnancy is delayed after passing the first year of marriage, but in case you become anxious for the delay, you can consult the doctor even before passing this period, perhaps doctor advises you to do one or more medical test, but it is often advised to start diagnostic testing before spending 1 year trying to conceive in women who have reached thirty-five years of age, as well as women who have irregular menstruation.

What tests are performed for the husband?

Sometimes the doctor advises, after confirming the husband’s health history, to conduct a semen analysis, and this examination includes knowing the number of sperms produced by the man, and the wellness and health of these sperms.

Other tests may sometimes be required.

Blood tests may reveal the level of hormones in a man, as the presence of abnormal levels of these hormones in the blood causes problems in the pregnancy of the wife. Blood tests are also used to examine genes that may cause infertility.

Ultrasound imaging, of the human body to reveal any anatomical problems, as some men suffer from a blockage of the sperm vessel.

Urine examination: Urine tests may sometimes reveal that sperm moves in the wrong direction, as it goes toward the bladder instead of the right direction outside the body.

A biopsy, or sample, if the semen analysis does not contain any sperm, or it contains small amounts of it, biopsy of a man may be needed for examination, where the doctor takes a small tissue from the testicles and examine it under a microscope, to ensure that the body makes sperm or not.

What tests may women need?

After investigating the wife's health history, details of her menstrual cycle and its sequence, she may need to do some tests or analyzes, including:

Blood tests: To measure the levels of female hormones in the blood, abnormal levels of these hormones may prevent pregnancy, and tests are also performed for some genetic diseases that cause infertility.

Ovulation tests: They are many and multiple tests to find out if the wife is ovulating or producing ova from the ovaries without problems and these ova are entering the tube connected to the uterus which is the most important process that leads to pregnancy.

Tests to ensure the integrity of the uterus and the tubes connected to it known as the fallopian tubes as problems in those tubes and the uterus are among the most common causes of infertility and pregnancy problems.

The tests that help to know this, are:

Ultrasound or other tests to create an image of the inside of the body, and to know if there are birth defects in the womb, such as a blockage in the fallopian tube, which may result from chronic infections or previous operations, or any other problems.

These tests are not considered easy, as the case with radiography, they include minor operations, for example, the doctor may have to look inside of the uterus, using a small tube equipped with a camera through the vagina, or by using a thin tube through a small opening of the skin, to examine the abdominal cavity and exterior of the uterus.

What happens after these tests?

Test results may reveal a problem, in this case, the doctor will arrange a treatment plan for it.

The tests and checkups despite all of this may not diagnose the problem. In these cases, there are other methods of treatment that the doctor may use to help the couple in childbearing.

Confronting the problem of infertility may cause extreme stress for the couple and it is normal to feel sad and anxious but more importantly to put these feelings aside and try to deal with the problem by talking to the doctor or psychological counselor.

In vitro fertilization (IVF)

It is a complex series of procedures used to help fertilization or to prevent genetic problems and help in having a child.

How the IVF works?

Following steps are done after menstruation:

• First: Stimulation of the ovaries
• Second: Retrieval of mature eggs from the ovaries
• Third: Fertilized by sperm in the laboratory.
• Fourth: The fertilized egg is transferred to the uterus.

The full IVF course takes about three weeks, sometimes these steps are divided into different parts, and the process can take longer.

Are IVF babies fertile ?

Yes, the incidence of infertility in adults born as a result of IVF does not appear to increase.

One possible exception to this is men who were born after ICSI because their father was very weak in sperm quality.

This indicates that they inherited this from their father in some cases, we need more data to confirm this preliminary observation though.

How successful is IVF ؟

For example, women under the age of 35 who undergo IVF have a 39.6% chance of having a child, while a woman over 40 has an 11.5% chance.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently found that the success rate is increasing in every age group as technologies are improved and doctors become more experienced.

According to at least one study, the success rate - for women of all ages - after three IVF courses range from 34 to 42 percent in practice, to improve your success rate you should try at least three IVF courses.

The difference between IVF and ICSI

The main difference between IVF and ICSI is how the sperm fertilizes the egg.

In IVF, the egg and sperm are left in a fertilization dish of their own.

In ICSI, one sperm is injected directly into the egg.

In other words, in ICSI, each egg is injected individually with one sperm, while in IVF, the sperm must penetrate naturally.

The difference between IVF children and normal children

The only difference between IVF babies and normal babies is that in IVF, sperm and eggs are fertilized in the laboratory under the supervision of doctors and fertilization occurs in the test tube instead of the fallopian tube.

As for the children themselves, the vast majority of studies so far indicate that children are growing normally.

The main risk factor in child development problems is due to early childbirth more commonly in multiple pregnancies (twins, etc.).
